Membership
"Because of things that have nothing to do with someone's worth, priviliges have been doled out-- not based on merit or anything--but because someone decides that the way I look means that I should be at a disadvantage."
COS member
Membership isn't necessarily about skin color or how you vote. It is more about having the passion to educate yourself and take action to change inequality in the United States. Young women and girls of color have repeatedly been denied the privileges that have been given to other people in our society
Therefore YWU membership must be reserved for those who a) self-identify as a woman of color b) are within the age range of 13-35 and c) are about helping themselves and other women of color out of oppression and feeling ignored.
Becoming an Ally
Supporting everyone in a community makes it a stronger one, so our allies are very important to us. We are in cooperation with several partner organizations that are pro-equality like YWU. We also appreciate people who donate their money, artistic skills, time, and creative energy to help us improve the lives of young women of color in Albuquerque.
The only requirement for becoming an ally to and for Young Women United is that you must be down to educate yourself and be passionate about anti-oppression issues that effect everyone, especially women of color.
§ Outreach to media, local publications, and within low-income, working class communities for organizing campaigns; and to recruit women of color for general membership
§ Develop and Build public relations materials, outlets and resources.
§ Build relationships with other organizations, communities, etc.
§ Lead administrative, managerial and bookkeeping responsibilities for the entire organization
