On June 12, 2010, Young Women United joined by community allies marched in the Albuquerque Gay Pride Parade for the first time.  In order to show YWU’s support for all families, including those that don’t fit the traditional nuclear model we chose the theme “Love Makes a Family” for our float.

On the morning of the Pride Parade YWU members, staff, and community volunteers decorated a truck with a banner of our “Love Makes a Family” logo (which displays six different examples of families including a lesbian, a gay male, and a heterosexual couple headed families as well as single parent headed families with male, female and gender non-comforting parents; each inside of a heart, representing a different color of the GBLT Rainbow Flag.)  We also decorated the truck with balloons and signs made by our members for the occasion.

Once the parade started some of YWU’s members and community allies marched in front of truck holding the YWU Banner while others sat in the bed holding signs that read “Love Makes a Family,” “All we need is Love,” “Homophobia Hurts Families,” etc.  People in the back of the truck threw candy to the crowd as women on foot pass out flyers about Young Women United.  We has such a good time that Josepha, a Circle of Strength member asked, “Why didn’t we start doing this years ago?”

We also held a booth at the Gay Pride Festival, where we sold our “Love Makes a Family” tees, pins, and bumper stickers.  And as it has become our tradition we sold “Pussy Pops,” of which for the third year in a row we completely sold out.

For making our presents at ABQ Gay Pride YWU thanks the following people: Carmen Prince for lending us your truck to use as a parade float; Monie Trujillo, Cathy Arellano, Gina Diaz and Christopher Ramirez for holding down our booth.  Because of you we were able to make $375 from our sales.  We would also like to thank all we help us prepare and participated in YWU presents at ABQ Gay Pride 2010.

YWU hopes to continue to have a presents in future ABQ Gay Prides and will apply this year’s experience to make 2011’s float and booth exceed those in the past.
