in the beginning…
Fall 1999. A group of young women of color came together to talk about bringing resources into Albuquerque, specifically for young women of color. Small meetings began in peeps homes, and an organization was formed.

safe access to health care clinics
Summer – Fall 2000. We collaborated with NM Planned Parenthood and the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice to get a buffer zone around health care clinics. We got spanked at City Council, but we learned a lot.

Spring 2000. We hired our first part-time community organizer, Ann Caton.
rape visibility & education
Spring 2000 – 2002.We dropped rape awareness stickers in bathroom stalls, bar walls, and any other flat surface. We dropped banners in parks and over the highway. |

Circle of Strength
Summer 2001. We walked the neighborhoods of the SE Heights to recruit teenage women of color to a new leadership development and community organizing program. We held movie nights and open houses, and the Circle was formed.
criminalization of youth
Fall 2001. We fought the arming of school security. The Circle gathered 450 signatures in 2 weeks to make their case. We won, but they’ll be back with some more nonsense.
september 11 response
Fall 2001. We dropped hundreds of “stop the backlash” stickers and flyers across town. We did a community review of the Journal’s war coverage and met with their editorial board.

Who We Be... outreach video
Fall 2002. We put together a 5-minute video that told the story of the Circle and young women’s experiences in school. The movie was recently shown at the VC film fest in LA.
unethical sterilization
Spring 2002. The older crew distributed flyers to expose the unethical tactics of CRACK and chased those CRACKheads out of town.
people of color against the war
Spring 2002. We collaborated with peeps in town to raise our voices against the war. We had a rally 80 strong, with solid media coverage.

Sister Fire
2004. YWU joins INCITE! in their national performing arts tour. YWU continues to annually host ‘Burque all women of color performing arts event.
COS PSA's
April of 2004. COS produced Public Service Announcements about sex ed and dating violence with the help of the National Federation of Broadcasters.
New Staff
December 2004. Adriann Barboa is hired as the new Development Coordinator and Community Organizer.
YWU Intergenerational Retreat
August 2004, Sky City Resort. Both Circles came together and drafted up our formal Board Structure!
YWU is honored at International Women’s Day Luncheon
